Four Program Models for Studying Abroad

A student who is enrolled in an academic program in a country different from their own is called studying abroad. It is a learning experience that can last as brief as one academic term to the entirety of completing a full degree. American students have pursued international education in places such as the United Kingdom, Italy, France, China and Spain.

There are four basic models for studying abroad programs. The four models are

  • Island
  • Integrated
  • Hybrid
  • Field-study

Island programs have students learning at a study center with other American students. Island models’ curricula are developed by domestic universities or third-party program providers. An integrated program requires a student to enroll in classes alongside local students at a specific host university. A hybrid program is, as the name suggests, a hybrid of island and integrated models. Students usually take most of the classes at the university (again, with local students) and then the remainder of their coursework at a study center. A field-based program tends to be liberally structured, with a curriculum focusing more on a theme rather than specific coursework. Independent study is often a learning factor in field-based study abroad programs.

Students can study abroad by directly enrolling to an international university or participating in an exchange program between a home institution and a host institution. Direct enrollment programs tend to attract more independent students, as this option usually requires individuals to find their own housing and study alongside local students.

Students can also study abroad by finding programs with corresponding study centers and/or international branch campuses. These programs usually follow the “island” model, which allows students to study abroad while keeping close connections with American students and American institutions.

Students may also elect to study abroad via third-party providers. Such sponsors can be nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Coursework through third-party providers usually assist students in registration and housing, and may also incorporate social guidance into the academic curriculum.

A major downfall to this idea is that it can be hard for the nanny to find time to take care of all of the school work they are hoping to complete, tend to their duties as a caregiver, and spend any time experiencing the culture of their host country. This needs to be considered fully before taking a position such as this.

Hosting a Foreign Exchange Student

There are programs where you can sign your family up to host a student from another country. There are certainly things you need to consider before signing up for such a program. You will need to have plenty of room in your home for the exchange student. They will likely prefer to have their own room. It is difficult enough to feel at home in a new country without having to share a room with a stranger. Another consideration is cost. Although the student will pay for their own travel expenses and have some spending money, they will need to be fed, and unexpected events may come up that you will be responsible for paying for.

Hosting a foreign exchange student will create lifelong memories for your family and the student you host. You will learn all about the culture of a foreign country, and you will be able to share your culture with a student who has traveled from a far away land. Your children will have the experience of a lifetime and make a friend for life. Keeping Up With Your Studies While Traveling Abroad

Stay in touch with them so that you can keep up with any new projects your class is tackling. If your classes have an online forum or message board, check in often. You will likely find your classmates discussing any work that you may be having problems with. Keeping up with your school work doesn’t have to keep you from enjoying your time traveling abroad.

Learning About Yourself While Traveling Abroad

ContentThere are so many different things you can learn by travelling, especially outside the country you have lived in. The most important lessons however, are those you learn about yourself. When you travel, you will find out how good you are at adapting to local customs and also how easily you make new friends and create connections with those you meet.

It can be very challenging to adapt your lifestyle to that you will experience while traveling abroad. Don’t feel obligated to participate in something if it goes against your principles, but don’t put down the beliefs of those in the country you are visiting. Finally, the rules of etiquette differ greatly around the world, read up on what is expected of you before you begin your travels to avoid embarrassment.

You will find out very quickly how well you make new friends and connections. Many people have made lifelong friends while they are traveling internationally. Not only will you have the opportunity to meet those from the country you are visiting, you may be lucky enough to meet others who are visiting as well. It can be very easy to connect with others who are also experiencing a foreign culture. You will have to make sure your communication skills are at their peak, since there will likely be language barriers with many people you meet.
