Stretching Your Money to its Limits

When you want to live cheaply, you have an unbelievable number of options at your disposal. On the one hand, you can do things like research cheap places to live. For another, you can go to college online and save yourself a lot of money on meals, on-campus living and commuting. Of course, you can also combine these things and do very well.

When you want to stretch your money to its limits, you want to combine living in the cheapest part of the world you can stand with going to school online. While you won’t be living the posh life for only a few hundred dollars a month, you can live quite comfortably in a lot of places for a lot less than you would as a regular student at most universities. Needless to say, this is one secret most people aren’t very comfortable with because of the inertia of their lives.

You have to be a pretty intrepid individual to go forth and live in a far off place. You have to leave your family and friends behind, and take up a whole new lifestyle in a whole new place. This is not for the faint of heart, since you will have no one to back you up if you get into trouble in your new homeland. If you can cut it during this time, however, you can save a small fortune on your education and still live fairly well in the process. Getting your degree should be an adventure, after all.

How to Succeed as an Online Student

You have been accepted into an online degree program and have utilized any transfer credits, but now what? You have the determination, and you’re fairly certain you have the discipline and time management skills necessary, but what should you focus on to truly succeed?

First of all, familiarize yourself with the college’s course management software. This is your virtual classroom and source for all school communications. Login to your classes frequently and check any school communications, such as your e-mail or a bulletin board announcement, at least twice a week.

Before classes start, if possible, preview the syllabi and order books and materials ahead of time. You don’t necessarily have to order supplies from the campus bookstore, so search the Internet for textbooks at a lower cost.

Keep a consistent schedule when it comes to class. Set aside a specific hour or certain days of the week to devote to schoolwork. If you get in the habit of doing this, it’s much easier to maintain a schedule throughout the rest of the semester.

If the online program provides chat rooms, online lectures, tutoring services, or discussion boards, make full use of these facilities. Get to know the college’s online research resources such as the library website or other databases. If you aren’t sure how to access these technologies, talk with your advisor.

Keeping an open communication with your advisor is vital. Check in every so often with an e-mail to make sure everything is on track to keep yourself up-to-date with any deadlines. And don’t forget to celebrate those accomplishments!

The internet has given students all around the world the opportunity to better themselves and live a better life. Not all students were able to study what they want to in the past, but now with the help of the internet everyone can. Students who are disabled or that live to far away from a university can turn on their computer today and go to class online. More subjects are now taught online than ever before and with the help of today’s technology students can grasp concepts better than before. Fifty years ago teachers where using black chalk boards and old projectors to illustrate what they were teaching visually. Today teachers have a very expansive arsenal for teaching from up to date videos found on the internet to video chat with the people leading their field of expertise.

Not only are online classes an economical choice, but they are also becoming the preferred choice to many students. There are various reasons why students want to use the internet over a classroom and one of the major reasons is that it is less stressful. Students today don’t have to worry about traveling to their schools anymore and the stress that comes with it. Most people decide not to go back to school again, because they have kids.  Students can juggle a home life with schooling, because their classroom is at home. There is no more pressure about making the choice of going to school today or staying home with a sick child.

The Internet Creates Unlimited Learning Potential

Education from the other side of the planet does not have to mean traveling thousands of miles abroad to recieve it anymore. The internet has provided people with the opportunity to connect with each other – and more importantly, a way for students to connect with qualified professors from all over the world. Students can have discussions about their homework while they are thousands of miles apart. Researchers can report their findings with a colleague to collaborate a report while enjoying their time at home. Online education is happening all the time, from all over the world. Learning is not done in a classroom anymore; it can happen anywhere you have internet connection.

Teaching and learning are not what they used to be decades ago, and now a student has a choice between finding ways to educate themselves, or following the plan of a teacher. In the past, a teacher had the knowledge of where to find good information to teacher their students. Now a student can use the resources from the internet to find information. Teachers are not obsolete in any way, because there is a lot of false information on the internet. A teacher’s new role is now guiding students to the right resources and identifying false information.  Teachers that conduct online classes know the power of the internet and guide many students to helpful online resources. Students should be more inclined to find teachers on the internet, because that’s where most people find information in today’s world.

The Benefits of Online Classes

Online courses are becoming increasingly more popular, at both community college and university levels. There are two types of online classes that are available – those that are completely conducted in a virtual classroom, and those that are conducted as a hybrid between online and traditional classes. However, the completely virtual classes have an advantage over both a traditional classroom setting and hybrid courses.

  1. You don’t have to quit work to go to school. Before online courses became available many adults had to make a choice – go to work so they could pay the bills, or quit work and go to school. Logically, most chose not to finish their degree and pay the bills. With an online class you can complete your coursework before work, during your breaks, and after work.
  2. You can choose the hours. Online courses offer the flexibility of being able to choose between studying during traditional school hours, completely at night, or in increments all throughout the day – there is no set schedule.
  3. You are not competing for an instructor’s attention. Traditional classrooms often more students than an instructor can focus on at once. In an online setting, students are able to ask questions through email, which ultimately makes getting one-on-one attention much easier.

For some, online classes fit their schedule and learning style perfectly. However, online courses are not for everyone – and that’s perfectly okay. Many people still find that they learn better in a traditional classroom setting.

One of the more eye opening aspects of travel is being exposed to new cultures. Even traveling from one region of a particular country to another can result in new observations. You might notice a Southern accent in one region. In another region, you might notice that people speak more quickly. Part of the cultural experience is staying open-minded. A person who is used to moving slowly and speaking slowly might find it offensive to interact with someone whose speech patterns are naturally fast and abrupt. Travel creates exposure to people who are different from you and helps you to challenge your own assumptions about various cultures.

Learning Through Art and Culture

While traveling to a new country, you will very likely be exposed to the music, film and art of that culture. Watching movies in another language and listening to the music will help you to learn the language. Speaking with the local people will accelerate your language learning.

Anytime you have a chance to travel, seize the opportunity for a learning experience. It might be different from academic learning in a school, but it’s still very valuable education.

Traveling For A Broader Education

A persons education is defined by their previous experiences. Traveling around the world or even in your own country allows for a broader education. This is the purpose of foreign exchange students and field trips, as it allows the student to connect knowledge with reality.
The best example of traveling for a broader education is foreign language out of country field trips. Many programs are available where after learning a foreign language sufficiently the student can then travel to with their class to a country where that is the native language. American students will typically either travel to Europe or Mexico with their teacher to speak with natives in the country. This is the ultimate lesson for someone who is learning a second language.
Science is another subject for which field trips are used to enhance lessons and education. Students will often have the opportunity to go on field trips to a farm, waste water treatment plant or nature center. These field trips will often go along directly with a lesson that is being learned in school and presents the real world applications of the lesson.
Field trips are often thought to be more prevalent among elementary school children. This is because field trips offer an opportunity for children to get out of the classroom and learn by socializing with their teacher and students. In class learning rarely presents an opportunity for hands on direct learning that a field trip can offer, which is why children are so frequently presented the option to go on a field trip. These type of field trips are often to a zoo or museum. The field trips also allow kids to learn while having fun, which can make learning that much more easy. They also present the opportunity to have a break from the day to day grind of school learning, which can wear down on a child’s character quickly.

Gaining Access To A More In-depth Education

Most of the time these days the standard education provides little in self satisfaction through learning. Expanding upon real world learning opportunities is the best way to really gain something out of an education. Many students consider the five day school week a daily grind and feel that they learn little to nothing at all on a daily basis. Making the effort to enhance ones learning will open new doors and career opportunities that standard schooling can almost never provide.
Take the opportunity to join after school clubs which focus on specific subjects in science, math or language. If possible get a tutor to help you master difficult subject matter. Many high school students have the choice to participate in programs which offer them the opportunity to work with a mentor. Participating in these programs gives students insight into hands on learning. Try to get involved with events like science fairs, academic competitions and volunteer opportunities. You never know when something unknown will spark your interest.
Take the time to practice things at home that will broaden your education as well. Perhaps read a book or write a short story. Try solving some complex mathematical equations or even design and run some science experiments. The point is to gain an interest in learning something that is fun for you. Its impossible to learn all there is to know about a specific subject by studying only an hour a day five days a week. By broadening your educational interests know its easier to decide what career you will follow in future life.
The lesson to be learned here is that you get out of an education what you put in to it. Don’t be afraid to try learning things that you don’t explore in school. Although our lives can be busy, making time to learn from extracurricular activities should be a goal that you strive for.
