The internet has given students all around the world the opportunity to better themselves and live a better life. Not all students were able to study what they want to in the past, but now with the help of the internet everyone can. Students who are disabled or that live to far away from a university can turn on their computer today and go to class online. More subjects are now taught online than ever before and with the help of today’s technology students can grasp concepts better than before. Fifty years ago teachers where using black chalk boards and old projectors to illustrate what they were teaching visually. Today teachers have a very expansive arsenal for teaching from up to date videos found on the internet to video chat with the people leading their field of expertise.

Not only are online classes an economical choice, but they are also becoming the preferred choice to many students. There are various reasons why students want to use the internet over a classroom and one of the major reasons is that it is less stressful. Students today don’t have to worry about traveling to their schools anymore and the stress that comes with it. Most people decide not to go back to school again, because they have kids.  Students can juggle a home life with schooling, because their classroom is at home. There is no more pressure about making the choice of going to school today or staying home with a sick child.

The Internet Creates Unlimited Learning Potential

Education from the other side of the planet does not have to mean traveling thousands of miles abroad to recieve it anymore. The internet has provided people with the opportunity to connect with each other – and more importantly, a way for students to connect with qualified professors from all over the world. Students can have discussions about their homework while they are thousands of miles apart. Researchers can report their findings with a colleague to collaborate a report while enjoying their time at home. Online education is happening all the time, from all over the world. Learning is not done in a classroom anymore; it can happen anywhere you have internet connection.

Teaching and learning are not what they used to be decades ago, and now a student has a choice between finding ways to educate themselves, or following the plan of a teacher. In the past, a teacher had the knowledge of where to find good information to teacher their students. Now a student can use the resources from the internet to find information. Teachers are not obsolete in any way, because there is a lot of false information on the internet. A teacher’s new role is now guiding students to the right resources and identifying false information.  Teachers that conduct online classes know the power of the internet and guide many students to helpful online resources. Students should be more inclined to find teachers on the internet, because that’s where most people find information in today’s world.

How to Succeed In An Online Classroom

Everyone has a different style of learning that suits their personality the best. For instance, many people learn much faster in an on-campus class because they are able to watch the instructor first hand. However, there are also those that learn just as fast, if not faster, taking virtual classes. Here are a few of the necessary components to succeed in an online classroom.

One of the first things that anyone needs in order to succeed with virtual class work is the motivation to do so – without it there is no point in even registering for the class. An online class is not different than one that is conducted on campus grounds. You still have to study and complete assignments on time.

Another key component of success is focus. Typically, students who cannot focus well without supervision don’t do nearly as well with online courses. Because the class is entirely conducted online, you must be able to focus on your homework and studying without a teacher standing over your shoulder looking to see if you are completing your work – in other words, you are completely accountable for your own study habits.

Many students find that it is easier to take an online class with a couple of friends – although one will also work. This not only provides study partners, but it also adds a level of accountability that would not otherwise be there. After all, no one wants to fail a class in front of their friends!

The Benefits of Online Classes

Online courses are becoming increasingly more popular, at both community college and university levels. There are two types of online classes that are available – those that are completely conducted in a virtual classroom, and those that are conducted as a hybrid between online and traditional classes. However, the completely virtual classes have an advantage over both a traditional classroom setting and hybrid courses.

  1. You don’t have to quit work to go to school. Before online courses became available many adults had to make a choice – go to work so they could pay the bills, or quit work and go to school. Logically, most chose not to finish their degree and pay the bills. With an online class you can complete your coursework before work, during your breaks, and after work.
  2. You can choose the hours. Online courses offer the flexibility of being able to choose between studying during traditional school hours, completely at night, or in increments all throughout the day – there is no set schedule.
  3. You are not competing for an instructor’s attention. Traditional classrooms often more students than an instructor can focus on at once. In an online setting, students are able to ask questions through email, which ultimately makes getting one-on-one attention much easier.

For some, online classes fit their schedule and learning style perfectly. However, online courses are not for everyone – and that’s perfectly okay. Many people still find that they learn better in a traditional classroom setting.

Learning to Ski

Have you been thinking about learning to ski for a number of years but never really done it? Skiing is a popular sport, and although the most advanced techniques may be more difficult to learn, the basics can be taught in a matter of a couple of lessons.  Also, there are plenty of ski deals on the Internet to make a ski trip possible.

The first ride up the chair lift is wild and exciting and is a fun experience on its own. Then, arriving at the top of the slope, usually the “bunny” slope the first time out, you get the exciting exhilaration of cruising back down to the bottom.

In the beginning, the instructor will teach you the technique called snow plowing. Once you get the concept down of how to slow yourself at low speeds you will move into turning. Making turns on skis is probably the most relaxing way to go down the slopes. Of course, the instructor will teach you the most important lesson of how to stop without hitting anything or having to fall to the ground in order to stop yourself.

Things to Learn While Studying Abroad in Europe

A study abroad program offers opportunities for international learning and collaborative learning that other venues, such as online learning, cannot hope to provide.  While study abroad programs are often touted for their ability to expand a student’s worldview, the small things that have a great impact on how students live while abroad are often overlooked.  Here, then, is a short list of things U.S. students rarely expect to learn – but always do – when studying abroad in Europe.

  • Learn to live with strangers. Many students decide to study or travel abroad in Europe on a budget, so they often book space in student hostels.  Hostels are often a major culture shock for Americans, who are used to having a great deal of personal space.  Fortunately, hostel living – no matter how exciting or frightening it may seem at the time – always provides a student with great stories to tell when he or she gets back to the states.
  • Figure out public transportation. Nearly every U.S. student learns to drive a car as a teenager.  However, unless a student is from a major metropolitan area that relies on public transportation, such as New York City, he or she may find the public transportation systems in Europe baffling at best.  There’s a special learning experience to be had in traveling among several European countries via Eurail, which seems to have different rules in each country – from pinpoint punctuality in Switzerland to laissez-faire “oh, sometime today” service in Italy to efficient but regularly on-strike – and therefore nonexistent – service in France.
  • Try “American” food in other countries. For better or worse, globalization means it’s now possible to eat McDonalds hamburgers in France and drink Starbucks coffee in Germany – and in many other European countries.  Often, study abroad students try these chains out of homesickness as much as curiosity, yet they’re never quite the same as they are in the United States.

Colorado Law Students Study Family Law in India

For Spring 2011, the University of Colorado Law School plans to send fifteen of its third-year law students to study abroad in India.  The students, who are all part of the law school’s family law clinic, will partner with students at the University of Bangalore, using collaborative learning to explore the differences between family law in the United States and family law in India, according to the law school.

The students’ studies will focus on four main areas of family law: family planning, the selling of children, domestic violence, and child abuse.  Each student will complete a research project on a topic related to one of these four areas of study, which will compare family law practice in India with the practice of family law in the United States.  For example, one student plans to study reproductive rights by visiting women’s health care clinics in the United States and India to learn how both countries address contraception and other family planning issues.

Students enrolled in the family law clinic at the University of Colorado hope that the international learning will take them beyond what online learning or mere travel and tourism could teach them, by giving them a first-hand look at how law is practiced in other countries.  One student indicated that she expects her experience in India to be similar to learning a foreign language.  Learning a foreign language taught her more about English, so she hopes that learning more about India’s family laws will make her a better practitioner of family law in the United States.

The family law clinic’s trip to India is paid for mostly by the University of Colorado Law School.  However, students have each contributed some money in order to pay for their transportation to India, as well as their lodging while they are abroad.
