How to Succeed as an Online Student

You have been accepted into an online degree program and have utilized any transfer credits, but now what? You have the determination, and you’re fairly certain you have the discipline and time management skills necessary, but what should you focus on to truly succeed?

First of all, familiarize yourself with the college’s course management software. This is your virtual classroom and source for all school communications. Login to your classes frequently and check any school communications, such as your e-mail or a bulletin board announcement, at least twice a week.

Before classes start, if possible, preview the syllabi and order books and materials ahead of time. You don’t necessarily have to order supplies from the campus bookstore, so search the Internet for textbooks at a lower cost.

Keep a consistent schedule when it comes to class. Set aside a specific hour or certain days of the week to devote to schoolwork. If you get in the habit of doing this, it’s much easier to maintain a schedule throughout the rest of the semester.

If the online program provides chat rooms, online lectures, tutoring services, or discussion boards, make full use of these facilities. Get to know the college’s online research resources such as the library website or other databases. If you aren’t sure how to access these technologies, talk with your advisor.

Keeping an open communication with your advisor is vital. Check in every so often with an e-mail to make sure everything is on track to keep yourself up-to-date with any deadlines. And don’t forget to celebrate those accomplishments!

Studying Abroad: Finding an Apartment – 2

When you choose to study abroad, it’s likely that you’ve already got a particular school in mind. However, not all schools have dorms for foreign students to stay in, especially colleges and universities. Depending on which country you’ll be studying in, renting an apartment can be very affordable so long as you’re careful about your selection.

Prioritize Your Needs

Ask yourself the following when looking at apartment listings for the town your school is in:

  • Is it close enough to get to school and back easily?
  • Is the neighborhood safe?
  • Can I afford the rent and utilities?
  • Is it in town or in a rural area?

Affordable rent and utilities and your safety should be the top priorities — yes, even above proximity to your school. You can always make a bit of a commute to get back and forth to school, but traveling by walking or by bicycle is only a good choice if you’re sure that it’s safe. Location also matters because town apartments tend to cost more, and rural ones tend to be more isolated. You may feel more comfortable paying a little more for rent so that your location is safer. If you are part of a college financial aid program, cost may not matter much.

Language Barriers

When studying abroad, you may not know much of the local language. It’s important to communicate well with your landlord, though, even if you have to have your translation book in your hands during your conversations. Making an effort to learn exactly what your new landlord wants shows that you want to follow the renting rules, and that makes you a welcome tennant.

The internet has given students all around the world the opportunity to better themselves and live a better life. Not all students were able to study what they want to in the past, but now with the help of the internet everyone can. Students who are disabled or that live to far away from a university can turn on their computer today and go to class online. Most people decide not to go back to school again, because they have kids.  Students can juggle a home life with schooling, because their classroom is at home. There is no more pressure about making the choice of going to school today or staying home with a sick child.

The Internet Creates Unlimited Learning Potential

Education from the other side of the planet does not have to mean traveling thousands of miles abroad to recieve it anymore. The internet has provided people with the opportunity to connect with each other – and more importantly, a way for students to connect with qualified professors from all over the world. Students can have discussions about their homework while they are thousands of miles apart. Researchers can report their findings with a colleague to collaborate a report while enjoying their time at home. Online education is happening all the time, from all over the world. Learning is not done in a classroom anymore; it can happen anywhere you have internet connection.

Teaching and learning are not what they used to be decades ago, and now a student has a choice between finding ways to educate themselves, or following the plan of a teacher. How to Succeed In An Online Classroom

Everyone has a different style of learning that suits their personality the best. For instance, many people learn much faster in an on-campus class because they are able to watch the instructor first hand. However, there are also those that learn just as fast, if not faster, taking virtual classes. Here are a few of the necessary components to succeed in an online classroom.

One of the first things that anyone needs in order to succeed with virtual class work is the motivation to do so – without it there is no point in even registering for the class. An online class is not different than one that is conducted on campus grounds. You still have to study and complete assignments on time.

Another key component of success is focus. Typically, students who cannot focus well without supervision don’t do nearly as well with online courses. Because the class is entirely conducted online, you must be able to focus on your homework and studying without a teacher standing over your shoulder looking to see if you are completing your work – in other words, you are completely accountable for your own study habits.

Many students find that it is easier to take an online class with a couple of friends – although one will also work. This not only provides study partners, but it also adds a level of accountability that would not otherwise be there. After all, no one wants to fail a class in front of their friends!

  2. You can choose the hours. Online courses offer the flexibility of being able to choose between studying during traditional school hours, completely at night, or in increments all throughout the day – there is no set schedule.
  3. You are not competing for an instructor’s attention. Traditional classrooms often more students than an instructor can focus on at once. In an online setting, students are able to ask questions through email, which ultimately makes getting one-on-one attention much easier.

For some, online classes fit their schedule and learning style perfectly. However, online courses are not for everyone – and that’s perfectly okay. Many people still find that they learn better in a traditional classroom setting.
